Conspiracy? I think so!
For those of you who didn’t watch, last night was the finale for Last Comic Standing on NBC. If you read this post you know that I was keeping my fingers crossed for a local comic, Marcus. He made it to the final 5, which was well deserved because he was certainly funny enough for that. When we watched them knock those 5 down to two and he was still standing, I admit I was a little hopeful. But in the end he lost out to Iliza Schlesinger(sp?). Iliza herself was pretty funny, but having seen Marcus on stage and getting a late night opportunity to listen to him try his stuff in a parking lot after hours at Wise Guys, I would say he’s still funnier. Any one who can make the words “big mouth bass” memorable is funny. His downfall – along with all the other funny guys on there – was that they kept trying to vote Iliza off which only ended up giving her more air time to build an audience.
After the show was over I started thinking about something odd. Iliza was the first female winner of Last Comic Standing. Earlier this year another reality competition show, “Top Chef”, crowned their first female winner. AND Gordan Ramsey named a female winner of “Hells Kitchen” last month for the first time! That made me think – Maybe it was a conspiracy. Maybe they’ve all decided they need to start making it look fair and therefore the women are “winning”. Could that be it? Could Marcus have been a victim of women’s libbers? We will never know…
In the end, I think it’s really cool that he made it as far as he did after only two years of working as a stand up comic. I’ve heard he’s working on other things, and when we went to see him in June at Wise Guys he said it would be awhile before he was back here, but if you ever get the chance to see him live I would go. It’s one of those “makes-milk-come-out-of-your-nose” kind of funnies.

I think there were a few factors that hurt Marcus. He went first, in TV that’s especially bad because people my not remember when the show is on and tune in a little later after his performance. Iliza also got the most airplay with as much as she was in the elimination battles. Not only that, but it seems that she got a boob job between taping and when they did the live shows.
Actually Marcus will be at Wise Guys in Ogden tommorow and at the West Valley one on Sunday.
